The Importance of Outdoor Play

Young children learn through play. Our early years practitioners are very skilled at creating opportunities for children to engage with the curriculum through play, both outdoors and indoors. Playing, learning and having fun outdoors helps to improve wellbeing and resilience. It’s great for children’s physical and mental health, and also provides children with the opportunity to develop a lifelong appreciation of the natural world. There’s more and more evidence about the positive impact that learning outdoors can have on educational attainment.

Will my child get sick if they play outside in all weathers?

It's not true! Being outside in cold or wet weather will not make your child more likely to catch a cold or flu. With suitable clothing, children can be outside in all weathers, exploring the natural world and building their physical and mental resilience. Spending time outdoors was even more beneficial during the coronavirus pandemic, as it was harder for the virus to spread outside.

At Langlees ELC Centre we value the benefits of outdoor play for our wee people and strive to ensure outdoor play is accessible at all times. Children can make independent choices to freely flow between indoors and out in all weathers. We also have Woodlands Wanderers trips to support new and exciting outdoor learning and experiences with multiple groups of children accessing these sessions.

Clothing

To best support outdoor play and learning at nursery we do ask that you dress your child in weather appropriate clothing i.e. A Hat, Gloves and Scarf on a cold day and Sun Hat on a hot sunny day . Having Wellies, Waterproof Jacket, puddle Suit and Sun Hat stored at nursery will ensure your child is always ready for play in all weathers.

Please remember to have a spare sets of clothing stored in your child's nursery bag with socks, pants, trousers and tops and jumpers, we don't always have enough of some of these items in our nursery spares.
